Job Details Job Summary:

Under the medical direction of the anesthesiologist, the CRNA administers sedation/analgesia or anesthesia to render neonatal through geriatric patients insensible to pain during surgical and other medically directed procedures. The incumbent performs duties and tasks in accordance with the performance standards established for the job. The incumbent may have access to highly confidential patient, employee and/or Mercy proprietary information, and must handle & protect the information in accordance with hospital & system policies, HIPAA requirements and the highest level of ethical standards. The incumbent is responsible for reporting all security events, potential events, or other security risks to the organization. The incumbent is responsible for participation in and completion of all patient safety initiatives appropriate to the position. In addition, conducts all job responsibilities according to the Mission and Values of Mercy Hospital.


Licensures / Certifications:

Education enabling State of Maine licensure as a Registered Nurse, certification within the State requirement of eligibility and re-certify biannually. ACLS certification is required.


Work Experience & Skills:

Excellent interpersonal skills to deal with acutely ill patients and to interact with physicians and other OR staff. A high degree of analytical and problem solving skills as the incumbent must gather and assess data appropriately to patient condition and Rx in accordance with physician orders and department protocols.


Principal Responsibilities:

1. Prepares all medications, equipment, and anesthesia machine in a timely fashion.

· Absolutely follows FDA protocol for anesthesia machine check.

· Ensures proper care, cleaning, restocking turnover of equipment and supplies.

· Demonstrates anticipation of upcoming needs and requirements of next procedure.

2. Reviews patient history and physiologic findings prior to induction.

· Prepares a plan that ensures communication and coordination with the prescribing physician.

· Prepares patient for surgery, IV access, sedation, invasive line placement as needed, and comfort.

3. Formulates, under medical direction an appropriate anesthesia care plan.

· Considers patient acceptance and physiologic status.

· Works within restraints of time and budget.

4. Monitors patient's perioperative condition consulting with and informing the anesthesiologist and surgeon frequently and as necessary.

· Performs prompt, accurate and complete recording of vital signs, procedures, medications administered.

· Ensures adherence to CQI guidelines as demonstrated by graded post record review.

5. Safely transfers care to PACU team.

· Communicates essentials of anesthetic course.

· Completes all requirements of CQI, patient billing, and accurate patient charting.

6. Provides own individual professional growth and development.

· Actively seeks opportunities to further own professional growth.

· Participates in forums to further the growth of the profession.

· Maintains staff education record and continuing education log.

7. Participates in the clinical and didactic aspects of the UNE nurse anesthesia students.

· Participates in developing appropriate care plans with the student.

· Seeks clinical experiences that will expand the student's knowledge and safety.

· Completes daily and quarterly evaluations.

8. Maintains a safe work environment for patients, staff and self.

· Minimizes risk of fire, electrical shock, equipment malfunction and infection.

· Reports variance and unsafe conditions via the proper reporting mechanism.

· Keeps work space neat and clean.

9. Performs additional duties as required or assigned.
