SUMMARY OF MAJOR FUNCTION

Duties: Charge Entry Specialist will be responsible for the day–to-day data entry function. Specialists perform preliminary review of super bills to determine that sufficient data is present for processing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND WORK ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Position Competency and Knowledge of Essential Job Function.

2. Apply monies received from patients to patient accounts in practice management system.

3. Serves as a resource for staff and assists with technical questions/ issues, and demonstrates working knowledge.

4. Works closely with staff and the Central Billing Office to identify barriers to productivity and develop solutions to remove those barriers.

5. Remains current with knowledge of the charge entry process. This includes computer systems, reimbursement concepts and procedures, confidentiality, compliance, HIPAA issues, and other relevant regulations. Serves on committees and in work groups, and actively pursues educational and professional development training that supports the position.

6. Policies and procedures: works with the patient to ensure that policies and procedures are in place that consistently provide high quality work. Observes the need for new policies and procedures, or revisions to policies, and recommends needed changes to the Manager. Assures Department compliance with policies and procedures.

7. Complies with Inland Hospital Hand Hygiene Standards.

8. Adheres to Inland Hospital Standards of Behavior.

9. Performs all other duties assigned.

PHYSICAL CRITERIA/EFFORT

Work involves sitting 70%, walking and standing 20% and lifting 10%. Hearing and vision acuity constantly required. Repeated bending, squatting and stooping.

SAFETY

1. Maintain a safe environment which includes knowing and understanding hospital and departmental policies and procedures.

2. Report and directly address identified environmental hazards when appropriate.

3. Report and directly address violations of patient safety policy and/or protocol when involved or observed.

4. Other duties as requested by Director.

OCCUPATIONAL RISKS

Failure to follow established procedures could result in slips and falls or back injury from stooping and lifting.

PROBABILITY AND CONSEQUENCES OF ERRORS

Duties involve responsibility for data entry. Failure to do so could cause cash flow problems if not completed timely and accurately.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR THE JOB

Verbal ability is required to answer telephone, initiate correspondence, and understand medical and insurance terms. Must be self-disciplined due to frequent changes in work routines performed.

QUALIFICATIONS / EXPECTATIONS:

1. High School Diploma with a higher education preferred.

2. Demonstrated ability to lead and work well with a diverse team is essential.

3. Must have a proven record of excellent organizational skills and ability to work independently, with minimal supervision.

4. Excellent and efficient interpersonal and customer service skills.

5. Produces accurate and high quality work.

6. Self-starter, independent worker, problem solver.

7. Approachable from the staff's perspective.

11. Familiarity with CPT and ICD9 coding systems and medical terminology highly desirable.

14. Demonstrates and maintains professionalism at all times.
