Job Details Job Summary:

Position will focus on identifying opportunities for Mercy Hospital growth and value improvement. Position will incorporate relevant data and detail in the development of white papers, proposals, and concept documents to be shared with, and improved and prioritized by decision makers. Based on trends and stakeholder input, position will develop programs, services and processes that address community need and demand. In collaboration with the Finance Department, position will develop business plans, monitor performance of the new programs and services and identify learning's that will influence new plans. Successful candidate will work with leadership, operations, and clinicians toward developing/implementing prioritized concepts.

Position will work with system Strategic Planning counterparts, and will lead Mercy Hospital's participation in the system's annual planning cycle, including:

  • Understanding the system's Three Year Strategic Plan
  • Leading the Mercy effort to adopt/adapt elements of the System's Plan to Mercy's Strategic Plan, adding also those elements that are unique to the Mercy market
  • Leading the Mercy effort to adopt/adapt the System's annual goals to Mercy's annual goals, adding also those elements that are unique to the Mercy market

The incumbent will demonstrate essential business development, sales and marketing, financial skills, clinical and administrative ability, proactive initiative, resourcefulness, analytical and decision making skills as well as the ability to deal effectively and harmoniously with groups and individuals. The incumbent will understand and communicate quality and satisfaction goals and work well with and develop strong relationships with physicians and other stakeholders. The incumbent will have a good working knowledge of the system's best/relevant data sources, and will have the necessary skills to translate data into useful/actionable information. The successful candidate will have the ability to consolidate information into presentation format and present his/her recommendations in an effective manner.

The incumbent performs duties in accordance with performance standards. The incumbent may have access to highly confidential patient, employee, and Mercy proprietary information, and must handle and protect the information in accordance with hospital and system policies, HIPAA requirements, and the highest level of ethical standards. The incumbent is responsible for reporting all security events, potential events, and other security risks to the organization. The incumbent is accountable for employee safety and will attend safety and loss-control training, engage in injury prevention, perform accident and injury investigations including conducting root cause analysis, and assist in returning employees to regular duty. The incumbent is responsible for participating in and completing all patient safety initiatives appropriate to the position, and conducts all job responsibilities according to the Mission and Values of Mercy Hospital.


A Master's degree or higher with five (5) years of management experience in a health care system with focus on business development, sales and marketing, payer contracting, finance, employer coalition/quality systems, and/or provider relations strongly preferred. In unique circumstances, six (6) years or equivalent experience in the key focused areas may be substituted for a degree with approval. Five (5)years' experience in a leadership/management role in a healthcare setting required. Proven track record of business development opportunities in the healthcare market that demonstrated return on investment. Demonstrated knowledge of developing marketing programs and materials to ensure program growth. Skills in development of business plans, performance of financial /net revenue analysis as to impact of business reimbursement and profit margins. Managed care review and contracting experience with various managed care payer groups desirable. Skills in development of business plans, performance of financial /net revenue analysis as to impact of business reimbursement and profit margins. Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint required. Experience with more advanced data manipulation tools (Access, SQL) preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of managed care and quality measures. Demonstrated knowledge of key payer segments. Strong contract review and analytical skills. Must be able to communicate articulately, both orally and in writing; comprehend written and verbal communications; and must be able to function efficiently in occasionally stressful work environments.
