Job Details Job Summary:

The Coder I works closely with clinical department staff and revenue management departments, under the supervision and guidance of the Coding Manager, to ensure that charges for services are completely and accurately posted, using correct CPT and HCPCS codes, and associating charges with correct ICD-9 diagnosis codes supported by documentation to ensure complete and compliant billing. The incumbent performs duties and tasks in accordance with standards established for the job. The incumbent may have access to highly confidential patient, employee and/or Mercy proprietary information, and must handle & protect the information in accordance with hospital & system policies, HIPAA requirements and the highest level of ethical standards. The incumbent is responsible for reporting all security events, potential events, or other security risks to the organization. The incumbent is responsible for participation in and completion of all patient safety initiatives appropriate to the position, and conducts all job responsibilities according to the Mission and Values of Mercy Hospital.

Requirements:

A High School Diploma or GED is required. A nationally recognized credential in coding (CCS or CPC) is strongly preferred. One (1) year ICD-9-CM, HCPCS, and CPT coding experience in a health care setting is preferred. Must be able to demonstrate knowledge in medical terminology as well as anatomy and physiology. Keyboarding accuracy and speed is essential. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel is strongly desired. Must have good interpersonal skills as the incumbent interacts with physicians, nurses and other departments in obtaining data. Must have a high degree of analytical and problem solving skills together with judgement and initiative to interpret the pertinence and correctness of information to patient diagnosis, assess validity of documentation and obtain clear and corrected information, as necessary, from physicians. Must be highly accountable for timeliness and accuracy of performance. Incumbent has access to highly confidential hospital and patient information. Incumbent's work directly impacts hospital revenues.
