GENERAL DESCRIPTION/STATEMENT:

The Central Sterile Supply (CSS) Technician is responsible for properly disinfecting, decontaminating, cleaning, processing, assembling, storing and distribution of sterile and non-sterile medical devices utilized in patient care. These support services are provided to all patient care areas throughout the health care facilities of the TAMC organization and other recognized affiliates of TAMC.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
TECHNICIAN I

1. To decontaminate items brought to CSS from various departments of AR Gould and other off site locations of the TAMC organization

2. To place instruments into proper sets and wrap following set policy and procedure.

3. Sterilize items in appropriate manner following policy and procedure.

4. Package cooled items for transport to off site locations.

5. Transport of sterile items to the Operating Room (OR)

6. Transport of soiled items to CSS from the OR

7. Delinting and folding of reusable towels used in various trays.

8. Proper use of chemicals used in disinfecting various types of equipment in CSS.

9. Maintaining a clean work environment by daily cleaning of all surfaces.

10. Rotate evening, holiday and weekend on-call hours with other CSS staff.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

A Medical Terminology class completed and passed during the first year of employment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
TECHNICIAN II

All above duties including the following:

1. Able to properly use the System One sterilizer in the GI Lab / DSU area

2. Properly checks all GI scopes for leaks before cleaning.

3. Cleaning of all GI scopes following proper procedure.

4. Drying scopes and hanging at the end of the day when necessary for DSU staff.

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Within six months of employment, technician must begin a home study course from Purdue University to become a Certified Registered Central Sterile Technician (CRCST). This course must be completed within 18 months from course start and once completed will be maintained by accumulating appropriate CEU points each year. Any extension to this time requirement must be approved by Director, Supply Chain.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
TECHNICIAN III

All above duties including the following:

1. Maintain a clean work environment in the OR decontamination area.

2. Turn around instruments needed for next case.

3. Knowing proper use of ultrasonic cleaner.

4. Maintain proper inventory to prevent delay in everyday operation by ordering through Lawson RSS

5. Proper replenishing of crash carts used on patient care units.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:


Performs other work related duties as assigned by supervisor or director which is pertinent to position or department of Material Management.

AVAILABILITY REQUIREMENTS:

Central Sterile Supply has varying 8 hour shifts. The department opens at 0630 and closes at 1730

EDUCATION SKILLS, EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

1. Prior experience in the decontamination and sterilization process is preferred.

2. High school diploma or equivalent.

3. To become a technician II or III the title of "Certified Registered Central Sterile Technician" (CRCST) will be obtained within one year of employment. Exceptions regarding length of time to achieve this status will be at the discretion of the supervisor and director.

4. A medical terminology course will be completed within the first year of employment. Any exceptions will be at the discretion of the supervisor and director.

5. An interest in continuing self development and participation in job related publications, courses, etc.

6. Good interpersonal skills.
