The Restorative Certified Nursing Assistant works with residents needing restorative nursing measures to gain or to maintain their highest, possible, practical functioning level. Provides direct restorative care and delegated therapy tasks including PROM and active ROM, ambulating, special positioning techniques, splints, assistive feeding devices / adaptive equipment, ADL training, bowel and bladder management, restorative dining, and bladder retraining. Duties also include assisting regular CNAs in positioning, ROM ambulation, ADL, cones / splints / contracture care, ADL specifics, safety device application, appropriate padding and wheelchair cushions, and safety device release, documenting progress of residents assisting in development of QI tools suitable for CNAs to utilize in performing QI audits of Restorative CNA care, and other duties as assigned.

Must be a Certified Nursing Assistant with a minimum of six months of experience in the Long Term Care setting; have knowledge of and an interest in geriatrics; and must have a good understanding of medical terminology as applied to Rehabilitation and Restorative Nursing issues.

Essential duties:

1. Provide safe and efficient restorative therapy to resident/patient under the direction of the RN.

2. Identify, evaluate and adjust resident restorative "lists" monthly or on as needed basis.

3. Will participate in departmental performance Improvement activities.

4. Will comply with facility departmental education programs.

5. Accept responsibility for professional growth and development.

6. Will follow facility Infection Prevention Policies.

7. Will follow facility Safety Policy and Procedure.

8. Follows and oversees staff adherence to Resident rights.

9. Follow TAMC Standards of Behavior.

10. Will be able to work with staff proficiency regarding documentation skills

11. Will demonstrate proficiency with resident/patient transfers and oversee and work with CNA team for safety and understanding of procedure.

12. Will demonstrate an understanding of adaptive equipment and work with CNA team for compliance and understanding.

13. Keeps charge nurse informed of patient's status and changes as well as problems.

14. Provides safe and efficient direct resident/patient car under direction of the RN.

15. Participates in P.T. In-services and staff meetings as needed.

16. Assist new staff with restorative orientation and education

17. Brief resident of procedures involved in restorative care and prepare necessary equipment

18. Demonstrate to residents and staff personnel, as necessary, the procedures involved in treatment process.

19. Provide basic gait training using canes, walkers, prosthesis, orthosis, ext. Performs safely.


1. Perform other work-related duties, within their scope of practice, as assigned.


Variable work schedule requires day, evening, and night work as well as weekends and holidays.


1. Successful completion of an approved CNA program with not less than 150 hours of instruction.

2. Currently active on the CNA registry.

3. Must be able to read and write with proficiency to accomplish all NA responsibilities.

4. Prior experience is not required.

5. Must maintain annual educational requirements of 12 hours and work an 8 hour shift in a 2 year period to maintain registry status.

6. Must complete restorative aide program, as well as orientation and shadowing in physical therapy.
