Job Details JOB SUMMARY:

Responsible for accurately and efficiently collecting clinical data and formulating meaningful reports that will support performance improvement at EMHS. Provide support and guidance to all clinical data analysts.


Two year degree and/or equivalent healthcare experience, knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology required. Leadership skills, excellent oral and written communication, organizational, interpersonal, and customer service skills. Ability to coordinate multiple tasks, integrate information from a variety of sources, problem solve, and assist data abstractors, serving as a knowledge base expert/resource. Ability to interpret, communicates and train data abstractors as needed on complex operational definitions.


Ø Presentation Skills: The ability to communicate effectively with PC users of all ability levels, effectively present information and respond to questions, and explain technical concepts in layman's terms.

Ø Language Skills: The ability to read and interpret technical bulletins and software documentation, write technical manuals, data dictionaries, reports and procedures.

Ø Reasoning Skills: The ability to analyze problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions, understand and interpret sophisticated technical application concepts.

Ø Technical Skills: A good working knowledge of PC hardware, Microsoft Windows, and Microsoft Office products; an understanding of networking concepts and confidentiality/security issues.

Ø Communication Skills: Strong communication and interpersonal skills, good telephone personality; must like working with people and have the ability to ascertain user needs.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Sedentary work requiring good manual dexterity for keyboarding. Work requires repetitive motions of wrists, hands and fingers. Must have correctable vision to work with a computer monitor, excellent hearing and listening skills to receive detailed information through oral communication. Extended periods of sitting, with option to stand, at computer. Some walking between departments or to meetings is involved. Ability to communicate in person and over the telephone, work independently and in team environments, work under pressure with precision and accuracy, and handle multiple projects simultaneously.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Busy office environment, seated at a desk, with option to stand, for extended periods of time. Work involves computer and telephone.


o Inform and educate data abstractors on changes in operational definitions, project deadlines, and regulatory changes related to work efforts serving as lead on.

o Troubleshoot for data abstractors and serve as knowledge base expert for assigned projects.

o Perform quality checks as assigned.

o Collects and accurately records data involving retrospective and/or concurrent chart reviews using a piloted audit tool.

o May create, test, and maintain various databases relating to data collected within research project.

o Prepares and cleans accurate base level reports

o Troubleshoots software/hardware and network-based problems.

o Trains others in common software.

o Organizes large amounts of data/reports.

o Maintains data files in uniform way so that others can access files.

o Appropriately handles employees and patient questions regarding collection of data.

o Contacts responsible department manager when barriers to job performance occur.

o Communicates status of assigned projects as directed on a regular basis.

o Assists in the preparation of baseline and quarterly reports

o Follows verbal or written job instructions.

o Assists in meeting and maintaining department goals and responsibilities.

o Attends project specific meetings.

o Actively participates at department meetings and communicates project specific updates

o Actively reviews work flows in order to evaluate method of performing a task with the goal of increasing availability.

o Willingly performs others duties as assigned

o Tracks, meets, and reports data submission deadlines as appropriate for work assignments

o Review and delegate abstracted cases that may not meet performance standards to appropriate abstractor for investigation and resolution.

o Serve as contact for outside agencies as directed by Director/Manager.

o Train and coordinate cross training for staff on projects as assigned.

o Collects data discreetly and unobtrusively.

o Works with Manager/Director to design and/or develop tools for department

o Provides data entry and associated quality assurance and validation, including inter-rater reliability procedures, to insures data is accurate and ready for analysis.

o Demonstrates a proficient level with MS programs.

o Promotes and appropriately uses IS team.

o Backs up targeted databases and other documents

o Develops and pilots research audit tools, including reliability procedures.

o Demonstrates the ability to learn to recognize problems that might adversely influence work products.

o Maintains project specific key indicator(s) with quality and accuracy.

o Follows abstraction guidelines and stays up to date with project requirements.

o Coordinates with abstractors to identify performance improvement opportunities and distribute information to appropriate parties.

o Maintains accurate and complete documentation for the projects responsible for.

o Integrates and communicates information from all dimensions of projects serving as lead on.

o Understands department finance goals and keeps department expenses to a minimum.

o Supports, adapts readily to, and assists in facilitating organizational and departmental change.

o Receives continuing education relevant to position.

o Remains current with knowledge of project(s) assigned.

o Continually explore ways of improving efficiency while maintaining high accuracy.
