Summer Student Nurse Externship Program

POSITION SUMMARY: A 10-week summer extern program which provides undergraduate Baccalaureate and Associates degree nursing students with an educational opportunity to improve their nursing skills in a clinical setting while providing summer employment. As a Student Nurse Extern, you will be introduced to an environment that fosters excellence in all areas of nursing. Under the supervision of a clinical coach (Registered Nurse), externs will provide direct patient care, gaining hands-on experience and enhancing assessment skills. Educational in-services opportunities will be presented throughout the 10-week program to further supplement the learning process. Each extern will be assigned a project that enhances nursing practice within the organization. This project will be presented at the end of the 10 week program to nursing staff and leaders. In addition externs will be involved in community events such as Camp Survivor and volunteering in the community.

Candidates must be able to commit to working a full 36-40 hours per week. Weekend and evening rotations may be required based on department needs. Schedules will be provided to selected candidates by May 1st. Candidates must have their own source of transportation to assigned community rotations.


· Must be enrolled in an Accredited Associates Degree or Bachelors of Science Nursing program

· Must be in good standing in the School of Nursing

· Attain senior status the Fall of 2018


•Active and in good standing Maine CNA License Required or eligible to obtain.

· BLS required.

· Two academic references from nursing faculty (one reference must be from a clinical instructor).

· Minimum of one employer reference

· Current Resume

· A letter of interest to include an introduction, statement of student objectives, a description of what professional nursing means to you, a description of experience of care-giving and any other relevant degrees or employment.

· Answer the following questions:

1.) Describe your first hands-on clinical experience in nursing school. What fears did you have? What surprised you the most? What were you most proud of?

2.) Describe the last time you made a mistake or experienced failure. What did you learn and what steps have you taken to ensure it won't happen again?

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE/SKILLS: legible handwriting and other skills as outlined in unit based orientation. Age specific competency certification.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Capacity to concentrate in a busy and often stressful environment. Ability to come in close contact with people. Sitting, and extended periods of standing and walking are required. Stretchers, monitors, pumps are moved several times a day to accommodate patient and equipment transfers. Reaching and stretching may be required at any time. Ability to push and pull heavy computers on wheels; push wheelchairs with 300+ pound patients, frequently lifting 50 pounds without assistance; high volume of stooping, bending, lifting, pulling and twisting. Must be able to stretch, reach, and retrieve equipment from the supply carts of bend to reach equipment supplied below knee level. Must possess upper body strength, agility and lung capacity necessary to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation and have the ability to wear protective equipment and to pass fit testing. Portable O2 tanks are lifted from O2 racks to stretchers to accompany patients. Use of the electronic medical record requires visual acuity for reading information on computer screens and fine motor skills for keyboarding and use of a mouse.
