Job Details SUMMARY OF MAJOR FUNCTION



This position is accountable to provide the following functions:

· Nutritional care to hospital patients and nursing home residents through the application of current knowledge in the field of practice,

· Back-up dietitian for any of the following areas: Inpatients, Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME), MNT Clinic outpatients at Inland/Lakewood and/or associated Inland Family office practices as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND WORK ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES*

  1. Position Competency and Knowledge of Essential Job Functions.
  2. Responsible for timely, professional nutrition assessment, evaluation, intervention, recommendations, follow-up, education/ counseling and documentation (MNT) for inpatients, outpatients, residents, and significant others as appropriate. Recommends modifications to Nutrition Care Plan to meet patient specific needs.
  3. Provide individual and group patient nutritional counseling, teaching, and follow-up in Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) and outpatients as assigned
  4. Collaborate with health care professionals on the assessment of complex patients.
  5. Monitor nutritional screening. Evaluate patient tolerance to therapeutic diets, when appropriate.
  6. Participate in multi-disciplinary meetings, consult with staff, and communicate effectively.
  7. Provide expertise and education to individuals and groups on health topics.
  8. Maintain good working relationship with patients, residents, physicians, FNS staff, visitors and all personnel.
  9. Perform clinical nutrition related duties in the absence of the Director, Diabetes & Nutrition Wellness
  10. Complies with Inland Hospital Hand Hygiene Standards.
  11. Adheres to Inland Hospital Standards of Behavior.
  12. Performs all other duties assigned.


PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT

Works in a modern, well equipped environment. Exposed to patient/ resident elements while providing care on the units. Usual stresses of deadlines incumbent to the position.

PHYSICAL CRITERIA/ EFFORT



Minimal physical effort required. Intermittent sitting (50%), standing (30%), and walking (20%) with a wide freedom of movement. Moderate lifting, carrying, stooping, bending, pushing and pulling (25#). Frequent periods of concentration requiring close attention to detail while monitoring the activities of others. Frequent opportunity for diversification of tasks with no relief.

1. Maintain a safe environment which includes knowing and understanding hospital and departmental policies and procedures.

2. Report and directly address identified environmental hazards when appropriate.

3. Report and directly address violations of patient safety policy and/or protocol when involved or observed.

OCCUPATIONAL RISKS

Failure to follow established procedures could result in undue exposure to kitchen safety hazards and/ or disease/infection in patient/ resident contact.

PROBABILITY AND CONSEQUENCES OF ERROR



Duties involve responsibility for recommending timely and appropriate care, directing staff, and reviewing patient menus/ cards. Injury could result from erroneous or untimely recommendations/ information, review, and/ or follow-up.

NUMBERS SUPERVISED



Occasional supervision of students, as assigned

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR THE JOB



Current status as a Registered Dietitian (R.D.) with the American Dietetic Association. Current status as Licensed Dietitian (L.D.) within the State of Maine.

EDUCATION



Minimum of a four year undergraduate degree in food and nutrition, dietetics, food service, or a related field. Continuing education to meet and maintain registration and licensure requirements.

EXPERIENCE

One to three years as a dietitian in a health care setting.

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED



Parenteral and enteral nutrition. Regulatory agency standards. Knowledge of facility and departmental policies and procedures. Use of a computer.
