JOB SUMMARY: Our passionate, hardworking Community Relations team is seeking a creative and strategic communications leader who is energized by a fast-paced environment. The manager leads daily operation of a team of communications professionals in pursuit of organizational goals. The individual works with the director of Communications and Marketing to set priorities, advises staff on day to day output, make assignments and monitor results. The manager assures timely delivery of team assignments as expected and negotiates changes in delivery dates and expectations. The manager also carries a significant project load of strategic marketing priorities and sensitive communication plans. All Community Relations members are responsible for promoting the spirit of EMMC's Caring Behaviors through role modeling these behaviors in dealings with patients, families, coworkers, physicians and others interacting with the medical center.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's Degree in communication related field, strong writing and verbal communication skills, five or more years of experience in communications, public relations and/or marketing, demonstrated experience supervising both workflow and personnel and teams, demonstrated experience building results focused communication plans, demonstrated experience with all communication tactics, from print to digital and social media, must have the availability and means to travel as neededfor incidental travel.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION PREFERRED: Degree in communication related field, Accreditation in Public Relations, crisis communications experience--FEMA Public Information Officer training a plus

Specific Responsibilities to include but not limited to:

Supervises daily departmental functions:
  • Responsible for balancing team assignments among members
  • Works with director to set appropriate priorities for work assignments of team
  • Oversees communications activities, obtaining executive approval as appropriate
  • Conducts timely evaluations of staff, submitted to director for approval
  • Maintains productive, positive team culture through positive role modeling, coaching and transparency

Department operations:
  • Support timely response to media requests, rigorously encourage proactive outreach tomedia
  • Maintains good relationships with vendors and contractors
  • Coordinates with other EMMC and EMHS departments to maximize resource allocation and cooperation
  • Review internal and external communication products before final approval of Director or president
  • Maintain working awareness of the details of communication preferences and sensitivities of president and executive staff (i.e. treatment of names and titles, chain of approval, etc.)
  • Carries Community Relations pager, managing off hours requests for assistance andnotifying director of breaking events as appropriate
  • Manages Community Relations Emergency Preparedness plan and readiness
  • Fosters positive relationships with local, state, and national media organizations and personnel
  • Maintain EMHS system branding standards on all EMMC materials
  • Maintain and enforce departmental documentation, project records, media contacts,consents, etc.

Project Management:
  • Carry moderate project load, leading high level or high priority project communication
  • Role model the development and execution of communication plans and assist as needed.
  • Encourage immediate contact and appropriate expectations with client upon receipt ofproject assignment and role model the behavior on assigned projects
  • Establish and work with appropriate priorities when managing multiple assignments--help colleagues prioritize their workload based upon familiarity with organizational strategy
  • Responsible for adherence to brand standards, both graphic and written, ensuring integration with other departmental efforts, conferring with VP and colleagues as necessary to accomplish this coordination
  • In all arenas role model professional, friendly demeanor, be cooperative and helpful,establishing realistic expectations for whatever service you are providing, whether it is to the public, EMMC employees, or fellow staff members
  • Demonstrate can-do and will-do attitude regardless of the task

  • Provide editing support for all EMMC printed materials, cleaning up style, punctuation, spelling for final approval by Director or other executive
  • Provide professional writing and editing without factual or typographical errors in a variety of media, including printed material and broadcast scripts
  • Demonstrate ability to translate pertinent healthcare information for presentation to internal and external audiences
  • Meet and help enforce established deadlines
  • Follow established protocols in securing interviews and photographs, including appropriate informed consent forms
  • Present all work for timely and appropriate review by colleagues and VP

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: extensive walking, a large amount of keyboarding and work with a computer mouse, and some occasional lifting; Light to medium carrying up to 50lbs., straight pulling/pushing, reaching in all directions, stopping, walking long distances, standing, sitting, repetitive motion/finger activity for sustained periods of time, speaking, hearing, moderate phone contact, visual activity

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job in a normal office environment. The noise level in the environment is usually moderate. Must be able to travel throughout the EMHS hospital system with occasional variable hours.
