The Chaplain is primarily responsible for providing pastoral care to patients, their families, and support to staff at Acadia Hospital. Work consists primarily within a structured treatment setting. Able to perform any duties and/or responsibilities assigned by supervisor for which qualified which could include "on-call" responsibilities.


• Provide pastoral care to patients, families and staff.

• Provide inpatient and outpatient group sessions for adults, adolescents, and children as requested

• Work with patients of all faiths, no formalized faith, and no faith.

• Provide a weekly interfaith worship service for patients at Acadia Hospital.

• Provide memorial services as needed.

• Keep all department record keeping responsibilities up to date at all times

• Document patient contact via chart entry. Chart entries should be entered in the patient's medical record on the day of the patient interaction.

• Maintain an ongoing relationship with unit team members through frequent contact.

• Assist treatment teams with community referrals as requested.

• Provide assistance to patients wishing to contact their community based priest, rabbi, Imam or pastor.

• Attend team meetings when requested by a patient or treatment team member.

• Train/orient staff through staff meetings and/or formal training sessions, as requested.

• Assist in maintaining a work environment free from recognized hazards that create a risk of injury to employees, patients or visitors and that all accidents and incidents are reported by employees and properly investigated. When appropriate, assist with the return of all workers with work related injuries and illnesses to gainful employment by providing pastoral counseling.

• Provide on-call coverage as assigned.

• Serve as a member of Acadia Hospital's Disaster Team and the Ethics Committee.

• Maintains education through attendance at Acadia sponsored trainings and other workshop sessions.


• Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.

• Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner in the community.

• Maintains regulatory requirements, including JCAHO, Federal and State.

• Complies with all organizational policies regarding EMHS's Code of Conduct and ethical business practices.

• Successful graduation from an accredited four-year college or university.

• Graduate from accredited theological seminary.

• Candidate with advanced studies in counseling preferred.

• Completion of a quarter of CPE or a Chaplain-Intern Program and practical experience in working with the mentally ill and those with chemical dependency issues.

• Must have demonstrated stability, tact, and possess a warm, empathic and caring personality.

• Should be able to relate easily with persons of varying backgrounds and religious orientations.

• Must possess an ability to relate well with other healthcare disciplines as a member of the caring team.

• Completes Healthstream Mandatory Education on a yearly basis.

• Attends all mandatory safety related education programs.

• Follows safety procedures to prevent injury to self and others.

• Carries assigned keys and wears hospital ID badge at all times.

• Refrains from the abuse of chemicals.

• Must possess good oral and written communication skills in the English language.

• Visual acuity, color vision, hearing acuity, and tactile sensation are necessary to respond to patient response and requests.

• The ability to read and speak English, to communicate and document information.

• Must possess the manual dexterity and a degree of body strength and flexibility; to respond to aggressive patient behavior.

• The ability to reach and stretch intermittently. Time may be spent sitting at a computer, collaborating with other healthcare team members.

• Standing and walking comprises some of the workday.
