GENERAL DESCRIPTION/STATEMENT:

The Clinical Educator assesses the clinical staff's educational needs, develops and coordinates/instructs continuing education for clinical personnel across the organization, and assists with ancillary continuing education as requested. The Clinical Educators lead clinical orientation for hospital staff. First and foremost, the clinical educator is a clinical expert with talent for sharing their knowledge and clinical expertise with others. This requires that the educator maintain contemporary clinical knowledge and practice by working in a clinical area of expertise.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

The National League for Nursing (NLN) and American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) identify the essential duties/skills of the Clinical Educator (Nursing Professional Development Expert) as:

1. Educator

2. Clinical Expert

3. Mentor

4. Change Agent

5. Researcher

6. Servant Leader

Additionally, the Clinical Educator

a. Assesses the educational needs for clinical staff and develops, implements, and evaluates programs to meet the organizational needs.

b. Apprises leaders of staff due for recertification in ample time for scheduling.

c. Assists with development of the annual calendar, and distributes the calendar throughout the organization.

d. Coordinates and/or assists with courses which are required to maintain competency.

e. Assists with meeting emergent educational needs across the organization. (e.g. new medical equipment training, etc.,..)

f. Assists with monitoring inventory of supplies and books.

g. Accepts responsibility for professional growth and development.

h. Serves on professional committees as assigned.

i. Demonstrates a commitment to the philosophy and objectives of the TAMC organization.

j. Maintains clinical competency in one or more areas of nursing by being actively involved in patient care activities.

k. Leads/coordinates educational programs as assigned.

l. Leads workforce development activities, including job shadows, student rotations, job fairs, etc.

m. Maintains educational expertise in:

i. Needs assessment

ii. Curriculum development

iii. Adult learning principles and educational theory

iv. Varied teaching style and approaches

v. Learner engagement

vi. Student evaluation

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Performs other work related duties as assigned.

2. Holds secondary clinical position or floats/cross-trains to a clinical position.

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:



1. Current Maine Registered Nurse License or license eligible.

2. AHA BLS Certification



AVAILABILITYREQUIREMENTS:



Variable work schedule requires business hours with some evening and weekend work to meet organizational needs. May be required to work with night staff after hours.



EDUCATION SKILLS, EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

1. Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.

2. Minimum of 3 years clinical experience, and maintain clinical expertise by actively working in an approved clinical area.

3. Good interpersonal skills.

4. Advanced computer skills needed for presentation, as well as for patient documentation.

5. Specialty certification in a clinical area of expertise preferred.

6. Willing to pursue and obtain certifications in other specialties, i.e. ACLS, PALS, NRP, etc. as assigned.
