Under the supervision of the technologist, performs the clerical functions of the laboratory . This includes, but is not limited to, answering the telephone, calling results, as required, responsibilities also include the preparation of specimens for testing or transport to reference laboratories. Under the supervision of the laboratory manager, other duties, including cross-coverage of other clerical positions are performed as assigned.


·Specimen preparation and disposition

·Answer telephones and direct calls

·Prepare specimens for transportation to reference laboratories

·Report results via telephone, fax and computer

·Provide customer service

·Perform duties of other clerical positions, as required

·Perform other duties as assigned


Education, License, Certification, and Experience:

· High school diploma or equivalent

· Related experience preferred, but not required

· Knowledge of medical terminology

· Must undergo orientation and training period

· Basic Life Support (BLS) within six months of hire. Updated as required by certification.


· Work cooperatively

· Good communication skills, and ability to work well with people

· Present a professional image

· Good judgement, discretion, tact, courtesy and etiquette

· Ability to maintain confidential information

Special Skills:

· Excellent interpersonal skills

· Reasonable typing skills, 50-60 words per minute preferred

· Ability to work with computers and software for spreadsheets, word processing and databases


· Normally an eight hour shift, weekdays

· Rotating shifts, including evenings and weekends, as required

· Periodic overtime may be required

· Periodic call back may be required

Physical Demands:

· Sitting 4-7 hrs/day

· Standing 1-3 hrs/day.

· Walking l-3 hrs/day.

· Lifting 10-25 lbs. with good body mechanics

· Twisting moderate l30-480 bends/day.

· Bending - moderate l30-480 bends/day.

· Endurance - light energy requirements.

· Wrist position - slight deviation of wrist.

· Pinching - frequent 500-1000/day or more.

· Frequent fine motor skills required.

· Either handedness 70-l00% of time.

· Both handedness 40-60% of time.

· Requires very accurate near vision (20/20).

· Moderate depth perception required.

· Requires hearing whispered voice at 8 ft.

· Moderate, clear speaking ability required.


· Frequent exposure to infections.

· Some handling of specimens required, which involves an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues.
